Summary
Magyar Köztársaság, commonly known as Hungary, is a nation whose capital is Budapest and whose primary language is Hungarian. Her human name is Elizabeta Héderváry, and she stands 160cm tall. Her wedding anniversary is June 8th, commemorating the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, an event that symbolized her union with Austria. Her national flowers are the Tulip and the Pelargonium. Historically, Hungary began as a nomadic people who roamed the plains on horseback. After settling down, she rose to become a dominant power in Central Europe for roughly six hundred years. In her youth, she was known to bully Austria, but as she aged and other nations treated her poorly, she came to cherish Austria for his kindness. The Monarchy of Austria-Hungary was established as a mutual support pact, leading Hungary to assist him in numerous conflicts since. Her dynamic with Prussia is that of long-time rivals. As children, Prussia frequently teased Hungary, assuming she was a boy due to her rough mannerisms and speech, a misconception Hungary herself initially shared. This led to Prussia mocking her hardships. The dynamic shifted when Prussia discovered Hungary wounded after fighting the Ottoman Turks, revealing her true gender. Although they remain on somewhat bad terms, Hungary admits that despite her hatred for Prussia, she would feel profound loneliness if he were to die. She also faced bullying from Mongolia and the Ottoman Empire during her childhood. While working in Austria’s household alongside Italy (then Chibitalia), Hungary acted as a maternal figure. She was the only one aware of Italy’s true gender, yet she often dressed him in traditional Hungarian women’s garments. Hungary has a contentious relationship with Romania, so much so that she names her dogs after famous Romanians. In retaliation, Romanian jokes frequently target Hungarians, similar to the nature of Polish or Soviet-era humor. Personality-wise, Hungary is introverted and works diligently behind the scenes. She is a loyal friend but a formidable enemy. Outwardly, she appears to be a beautiful, ladylike maiden with a lovely singing voice, but her speech can slip into the foul language of her nomadic past. She has a fondness for flowers, typically wearing them in her hair to represent Lake Balaton. Despite her feminine appearance, she is considered the most masculine character in the series and exhibits traits of a fujoshi. Her weapon of choice is a frying pan, which she often uses to strike Prussia. Her signature attire is a green military uniform with a matching beret, though she is often depicted in traditional Hungarian costumes. Creator Hidekaz Himaruya originally intended for Hungary to be a cross-dressing male, a role later assigned to Poland, who was initially designed as female. The original design for Hungary was recycled to serve as the basis for Lithuania’s character design.
