von Voltaire, Gwendal
Summary
Gwendal von Voltaire, the eldest son of Cecilie, has harbored objections to Yuri’s ascension as Maoh from the very beginning. A skilled tactician capable of wielding earth magic and casting barriers, Gwendal is also the commander of the demon army, frequently arriving with reinforcements when Yuri faces dire trouble. Beyond his military duties, he handles the kingdom’s paperwork, effectively running the state for Yuri. His brother Gunter often barges into his office demanding Yuri’s whereabouts, only for Gwendal to offer weary, plausible suggestions like locking Yuri away to ensure peace. Despite his tough exterior, Gwendal is deeply affected by his childhood best friend, Anissina von Karbelnikoff. An inventor who frequently uses him as a test subject for her creations, Anissina taught him to knit, a hobby Gwendal claims sharpens his concentration but which actually serves as a childhood stress reliever. His attempts at knitting often result in misshapen creatures, such as bears mistaken for black pigs. He also holds a soft spot for cute things, including the dolphin keychain, Bandou-kun, gifted to him by Yuri. Gwendal fears Anissina, often hiding to avoid her experiments, and sweats in panic at the thought of her. His loyalty to his family is evident in his willingness to stand against the Original King to save his brother Wolfram. Jozak reveals that Gwendal genuinely cares for Conrad’s well-being, preferring not to worry him despite the Original King’s orders to find the Forbidden Boxes. Gwendal’s left eye serves as the key to the "End of the Earth," one of the four Forbidden Boxes. His ancestor, Siegbert Voltaire, once fought alongside the Original King. In his youth, Gwendal exhibited the Mazoku Pride, a deep-seated disdain for humans, as noted by Dunheely Weller. During a duel in a nameless village unrecognized by Shin Makoku, Gwendal led an attack on bandits and witnessed Dunheely’s true, aged form. After Dunheely’s death, Gwendal buried him near a significant tree. Years later, he admitted that Dunheely was the largest presence within him, driven by his hatred for the man. Gwendal has no interest in romance, believing such matters are beyond his influence. However, he shows care for Greta, often babysitting her when Yuri and Wolfram are away. He knows how to bake, making animal-shaped cookies for Greta when Günter is absent, which Greta finds cute and Yuri praises for their skill. When Greta asks if she is disturbing his work, Gwendal replies that he does not mind if it is her.
