Knives, Millions
Summary
Millions Knives serves as the primary antagonist in the Trigun series. He stands as one of the rare fully sentient Plants and is the older twin brother of Vash. The twins were created during a mission aimed at advancing humanity and were raised on a settler spaceship under the care of Rem. However, Knives altered the vessel’s trajectory, triggering a crash that prevented human colonization of their new home planet. While Vash holds that all beings possess the potential for goodness and deserve to live, Knives adheres to a survival-of-the-fittest philosophy. After witnessing experiments conducted on another sentient Plant, he concluded that humans are grotesque and evil, necessitating their eradication. Vash opposes these plans and attempts to stop his brother, while Knives tries to convince Vash to abandon the idealistic teachings of Rem, though he fails to persuade Vash to join him. As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Knives views humans as parasites requiring extermination. He aims to establish a peaceful and equitable world with Vash and their fellow Plants, believing that wiping out humanity is the only path to this goal. Knives does not claim divinity, regarding himself merely as a superior being to Homo sapiens. Had he succeeded in eliminating all humans and establishing his Eden on Gunsmoke, it is highly probable that he would have acted as a kind and loving individual, much like Vash.
