Summary
Shuurei Kou, known as Shurei Hong in the English localization to distinguish her branch of the clan, is the sole daughter of Shouka Kou, a member of the Kou clan, one of the two most powerful families in Saiunkoku. As a direct descendant, she holds the title hime, denoting her status as a princess or lady. Although the series begins when she is sixteen, she is thirty years old by the conclusion of the Light Novel. Her zodiac sign is Sagittarius and her blood type is O. Despite her high birth, Shuurei endured a relatively impoverished upbringing. The Kou family’s wealth was largely depleted eight years ago during the imperial succession war, when much of it was donated to the needy. Her father’s profession provided little income, resulting in a home with no servants. Consequently, Shuurei mastered household duties such as cooking, cleaning, and needlework, skills atypical for a woman of her standing. To support herself, she worked various odd jobs, including playing the erhu professionally, serving as an accountant at the Kochou brothel in the Red Light District, and teaching at a local temple.
