Copy Rezo

Summary

Copy Rezo originated as a laboratory subject created by the original Rezo, who sought a cure for his own blindness by using Copy as a test subject. While Copy’s vision was restored, the original remained blind; this was because the dark lord Ruby Eye Shabranigdu was sealed within Rezo, a factor absent in the copy. Driven by a singular desire to surpass his creator, Copy initially planned to kill Rezo in a fair duel. After Rezo was slain by Lina Inverse, Gourry Gabriev, and Zelgadiss Graywords, Copy shifted his goal to either eliminating the trio or surviving the Giga Slave. He enlisted Erisiel Vrumugun to lure the heroes to Sairaag using wanted posters. There, he absorbed the power of the demon beast Zanaffar to gain immense strength, only to be defeated and killed by Lina, Gourry, Zelgadiss, Amelia Wil Tesla Saillune, and Sylphiel Nels Lahda using the Blessed Blade and Flagoon. Before dying with a smile, Copy asked to be buried beneath Flagoon. Lina explained that his obsession with revenge and inability to envision a future beyond his rivalry led to his downfall, though he ultimately earned the respect of his enemies. In the novel series, the narrative diverges when Rezo, enraged that his eyes failed to heal while Copy’s did, conducted further experiments out of spite, including fusing Copy with a mazoku. This transformation granted Copy a distinct will and pride, fueling his revenge. The anime hints at this fusion but does not elaborate on its significance. In the manga adaptation, the plot mirrors the anime but excludes Eris and Sylphiel’s father. Here, Copy is depicted as a will-less fusion of Rezo’s body and a mazoku. His killing of Eris is revealed through a flashback as the moment he first became aware of his own existence.
