Summary
As the president of the Shogi club at Haze Middle School, Tetsuo harbors a distinct aversion to Go, preferring the traditional Japanese board game instead. This dislike stems from his childhood, when his father strictly forbade Shogi and compelled him to practice Go from a very young age. Despite his efforts, Tetsuo felt he could never satisfy his father, largely because he consistently lost to Akira. He openly claims to despise Go because Akira outperforms him, maintaining a detached attitude toward the game while still playing occasionally to keep his skills sharp. Tetsuo shares the distinction of having graduated from Haze Middle School with Kimihiro. His birthday falls on January 8th. Notably, the character was depicted smoking cigarettes in earlier U.S. Shonen Jump versions of Hikaru no Go, though this detail was removed from the U.S. graphic novels and later Shonen Jump editions as of 2005.
