Son, Gokuu

Summary

Son Gokuu is a Saiyan, an extraterrestrial race originally named Kakarot. Born in age 737, he was dispatched from Planet Vegeta to Earth by his parents, Bardock and Gine, in the Dragon Ball Minus story. This mission aimed to save him from Freeza’s genocide of the Saiyan race and potentially sell him on the intergalactic market. After landing on Earth, he was adopted by Grandpa Gohan. Initially violent due to his Saiyan heritage, a head injury caused severe amnesia, transforming him into an innocent and tempered boy. His hobbies include fighting strong opponents and eating everything. In the main series, Gokuu meets companions like Bulma, Yamucha, Oolong, and Pu’ar, whose roles mirror characters from Wu Cheng'en's Journey to the West. He befriends Kuririn and participates in World Martial Arts Tournaments, battling foes who become allies such as Tenshinhan, Chaozu, and Majunior, later known as Piccolo. Dragon Ball Z begins five years after his victory in the 23rd Budokai Tenkaichi. Gokuu has a son, Son Gohan, named after his adoptive grandfather. Gohan lacks his father's love for combat but possesses immense hidden potential. Together, they face powerful adversaries including other Saiyans, a space tyrant, artificial humans, Majins, and Gods. Gokuu struggles with his identity after Raditz reveals his past and wrestles with the morality of killing, a conflict that peaks during his battle with Freeza on Namek. Dragon Ball GT, which is not based on Toriyama’s manga, sees Gokuu transformed into a child by Pilaf using the Black-Star Dragon Balls. He travels space with his granddaughter Pan and Trunks to retrieve the balls. During this journey, he fights Baby, a Tuffle seeking revenge on Saiyans; Super 17, a powered-up Artificial Human 17; and various Evil Dragons, or Shadow Dragons in the FUNimation dub, which are physical manifestations of negative energy from the Dragon Balls. The series concludes with Gokuu departing with Shenron, returning a century later to witness the match between Gokuu Jr. and Vegeta Jr. In Dragon Ball Online, set 216 years after Dragon Ball Z with significant creative input from Toriyama, a new villain named Miira seeks Gokuu’s DNA. In the Cross Epoch crossover one-shot with One Piece, Gokuu accompanies Luffy to a party hosted by Shenron, where key characters from both series received invitations. Personality-wise, Gokuu is laid-back, naive, and possesses a simple, practical worldview. Though often mistaken for stupid, he learns quickly once he grasps a concept. He is blunt, openly expressing opinions, such as questioning Krillin’s marriage to Android 18. While kind-hearted, he can feel intense anger when close friends die or innocents are murdered needlessly. His greatest trait is his tenacity and will to succeed. He excels at sparing enemies, though this is sometimes criticized as foolish, as they often attack him later. His focus on self-improvement as a warrior sometimes endangers humanity, such as when he studied Beerus during Bulma’s birthday or spared Vegeta in the Saiyan arc. However, he shows restraint, such as choosing not to resurrect himself after dying to Cell to protect Earth from the evil he attracts. Gokuu admits he is better at breaking things than creating them and is not much of a party-goer. He has a natural affinity for training younger fighters, including Gohan, Goten, Trunks, and Uub.
