Greenhill, Dwight
Summary
Dwight Greenhill served as the Chief of Staff to the Space Fleet Commander, later the Headquarters Commander, and ultimately the Alliance Investigation Chief within the Free Planets Star Fleet. He was the father of Frederica Greenhill and a highly respected officer, distinguished as one of the few military leaders who recognized the talent of Yang Wen-li. Following the failed Alliance invasion of the Empire and the heavy losses at the Battle of Amritsar, Greenhill grew disgruntled with the civilian leadership. His disenchantment aligned with the encouragement of former POW Arthur Lynch, a longtime friend whose opinions Greenhill favored despite Lynch’s failures at El Facil. Together, they formed the National Salvation Military Council (NSMC) to overthrow the civilian government and enacted martial law. Although Greenhill participated in the coup, he harbored personal doubts about his cause. One of his primary motivations for betraying the government was to control the other coup members and minimize bloodshed. Throughout the crisis, he attempted to moderate his subordinates’ actions, often without success. The coup initially succeeded, gaining control of over half of the Alliance’s surviving forces. However, it crumbled due to incompetence and resistance from Yang Wen-li. Greenhill’s plan to assassinate Yang failed when the assassin, Commander Bagdashu, publicly announced that the coup was a subversion orchestrated by Reinhard von Lohengramm, although Yang lacked solid proof. This revelation, combined with the massacre of protestors at a rally, destroyed the council’s public relations. After the defeat of the 11th Fleet at the Battle of Doria, most remaining neutral or NSMC-aligned military forces defected to Yang Wen-li’s side, leaving the council stranded on Heinessen. Greenhill was prepared to admit defeat when Yang destroyed the Artemis Necklace. When offered the option of using the citizens of Heinessen as hostages, Greenhill refused in horror and disgust, preferring to allow the nation to heal from the civil war as quickly as possible. Intending to commit suicide, Greenhill confronted Lynch, who confessed to instigating the coup under Duke Lohengramm’s orders. The confrontation ended with Lynch killing Greenhill in a shootout. Tragically, Greenhill’s actions produced the opposite effect of his intentions. The corrupt government remained in power, and the Alliance lost another fleet. The actions of the renegade military units turned public opinion against the military, destroying its last vestiges of independence from political control. Far from reviving the weakened Alliance, Greenhill and his group further weakened it, a situation that directly led to the Alliance’s demise only a few years later.
