Summary

Born into poverty on Earth, Tetsuro Hoshino is a young boy whose sole desire is to acquire a machine body. His motivation stems from a deep-seated need for revenge against Count Mecha, a malevolent figure who received a machine body and now hunts humans for sport after killing Tetsuro's mother. As a destitute street urchin, Tetsuro cannot afford such an upgrade, but he learns of a planet at the end of the Andromeda Galaxy where robot bodies are distributed free of charge. To reach this destination, he must secure a pass for the Galaxy Express 999, a cosmic railway. His fate changes when he encounters the enigmatic Maetel, who offers him unlimited access to the Express on the condition that she accompanies him as a travel companion. Tetsuro eagerly accepts, and the two embark on a journey across the stars. Initially, Tetsuro is whiny, immature, and selfish. However, through his adventures with Maetel, the people they meet, and the wonders he witnesses, he gradually matures into a strong young man. During this journey, he forms a profound bond of love with Maetel, deepening their connection even if their relationship is not strictly romantic.
