Shin-chan’s Yōkai Vacation Opens at No.3 With ¥539M Debut

Japan’s summer box office just got a little weirder—in the best way. Crayon Shin-chan the Movie: Super Strange! My Yōkai Monster Vacation opened July 31 and stormed into third place over its first weekend, moving about 441,000 tickets and pulling in roughly ¥539.4 million (around US$3.41 million) across Friday–Sunday, according to figures reported by industry trackers.
The Nohara clan’s latest theatrical romp sits behind two heavy hitters: Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which claimed the crown on its Japan debut weekend, and Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island, which slipped from first to second after a monster opening of its own. Even in a crowded season, Shin-chan’s yōkai “Bake-shon” still posted a rocket start for the long-running franchise.
Directed by Masaki Watanabe with a script by Yoshiko Nakamura, the film sends the family to Hiroshi’s hometown in Akita for fireworks—only for escaped yōkai to drag them into a nostalgic, rule-breaking spirit realm. Guest stars include Sairi Itō as nine-tailed fox Yako, while TOMOO belts the theme “Otona ni Nattara.” Shin-Ei Animation produced; Toho is distributing the still-running hit nationwide.
