MAPPA Opens Up on Dorohedoro S2: No Crunch Mandate, AI Off the Canvas

Studio MAPPA is finally airing out the long gap between Dorohedoro seasons. In a fresh Anime News Network sit-down from Anime Central 2026, animation director Yuichiro Hayashi, creative producer Yusuke Tannawa, and animation producer Koya Okamura walked through how Dorohedoro Season 2 actually got made—and how the studio tried to protect its people while cranking the chaos higher than season one.
Hayashi says the team never intended a six-year freeze. Work was supposed to restart soon after the first cour wrapped, but MAPPA’s heavy 3DCG commitments on Attack on Titan: The Final Season—and later inheriting Vinland Saga Season 2 from WIT Studio—pushed the schedule. Instead of parking the project, the studio spent roughly two years developing designs and visuals in parallel, then farmed out most background art to Studio Easter and MOA Studio so Hayashi’s core unit could stay intact.
Streaming rules also unlocked the gore Q Hayashida’s manga demands. With TV broadcast limits gone, MAPPA leaned harder into the unfiltered violence fans noticed online, while keeping a hybrid 2D/3D balance rather than the pure “more 2D” flip many assumed. Soundtrack collective (K)NoW_NAME returned early, delivering some 50–60 tracks in four months of back-and-forth with the storyboard team.
On labor—an issue that haunts every major studio—Hayashi framed rest as a production priority, not a slogan. MAPPA has bulked up staffing so animators can be assigned to a single title when two big shows run at once, and Tannawa stressed balancing workloads rather than stacking crunch. On AI, the studio’s line is blunt: never for images or artwork (echoing the anti-training disclaimer on Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc). AI might someday ease non-visual pipeline grunt work, Tannawa said, but MAPPA has not rolled it into production yet—and visuals stay human-made.
