Anime Matsuri’s 20th Anniversary Lights Up Houston This Weekend

Houston’s otaku calendar just hit a major milestone: Anime Matsuri opened its 20th anniversary run Thursday at the George R. Brown Convention Center, with the four-day celebration stretching through Sunday (July 23–26). Early doors on Day 1 already put Artist Alley, guest tables, and the sprawling exhibit halls in motion as fans poured into one of Texas’s largest Japanese pop-culture gatherings.

This year’s edition leans hard into variety beyond panels and shopping. Signature attraction Import Reactor brings itasha and import car culture onto the show floor, while a dedicated LARP arena, competitive gaming, cosplay contests, a Japanese fashion show, karaoke battles, and the 18+ Kabukicho goods zone fill out a program organizers clock at more than 800 hours across roughly 1.8 million square feet of convention space.

Guest row mixes longtime industry voices and cosplay creators, including Richard Epcar, Mela Lee, Ezra Weisz, Steven Prince, Dan Southworth, Reuben Langdon, Brian Beacock, and Ellyn Stern, among others. Autograph lines, photo ops, and hallway cosplay are already defining the weekend vibe for attendees bouncing between Red Carpet activations and the vendor maze.

Hours expand as the weekend builds—Friday noon–7 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.–7 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m.–4 p.m.—with day badges still a practical option for first-timers.
