In San Francisco, he encounters a mysterious silver-haired woman named Sophia, whose past she keeps hidden. She reveals her destination as New York and opts to travel alongside Wataru. As they journey across America, they uncover the remnants of fallen society and explore the essence of humanity.

The survivors of the Kanto Hell Earthquake constructed a new settlement they named "Hope Town." This once-peaceful community turns into a nightmare when it is attacked by the motorcycle gang known as "Hell's Wind," who kidnap the women while the remaining residents are powerless to resist. Together with her brother Makoto, she names the kitten Kuro. Kuro quickly brings happiness and laughter into the family's home. As the hardships of World War II bear down on Japan, caring for Kuro becomes more difficult for Nobuko and her family. One morning in August, Kuro begins to act oddly...

On August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima. That morning, a young boy named Shigeru left home for his job as a building excavator, carrying a bento made by his mother—but he never returned. His mother eventually found his remains, and beside them she discovered the bento box, completely blackened and charred. This anime is an adaptation of the book *Makkuro na Obentou (The Charred Lunchbox)* written by Kodama Tatsuharu and illustrated by Kitajima Shinpei. The actual bento box that becomes the focus of the story is on display at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.
