Synopsis
On August 6, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima. That morning, a young boy named Shigeru left home for his job as a building excavator, carrying a bento made by his mother—but he never returned. His mother eventually found his remains, and beside them she discovered the bento box, completely blackened and charred. This anime is an adaptation of the book *Makkuro na Obentou (The Charred Lunchbox)* written by Kodama Tatsuharu and illustrated by Kitajima Shinpei. The actual bento box that becomes the focus of the story is on display at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum.
