Because of a scheduling conflict, Versailles no Bara was unable to be broadcast in certain areas after episode 23. In order to provide a conclusion, a special episode called Moetsukita Bara no Shouzou was produced. Although it has some story elements in common with the main series, it differs substantially. This episode has never been aired again or made available on home video.

The TV special adapts Tsuboi Sakae's novel, drawing from her involvement in Japan's anarchist subculture and her opposition to military buildup for the Korean War. The production merges live-action scenes directed by Akio Jissoji with animated segments helmed by Shigetsugu Yoshida. The special aired as a single television event.
