Synopsis
In "Looking for the Full Moon," two years ago, Mitsuki Kouyama's childhood friend Eichi Sakurai moved to America just before she could confess her feelings to him. Despite the distance, they both vowed to pursue their dreams—Mitsuki aiming to become a professional singer, and Eichi an astronomer. She hopes her music will cross the ocean and shine like a full moon, reaching him someday. Her path is complicated by throat cancer, which weakens her voice and hinders her singing. Mitsuki's grandmother strongly disapproves of music and urges her to have surgery to treat the cancer, a procedure that could permanently silence her. Mitsuki refuses the operation. One day, the shinigami Meroko Yui and Takuto Kira appear, revealing that Mitsuki has only one year left to live. Shocked by this revelation, Mitsuki resolves to achieve her dream of becoming a singer with the help of her shinigami companions. "Full Moon wo Sagashite" chronicles Mitsuki's emotional journey and her relationship with Meroko and Takuto as they uncover the true essence of singing—and living.
Background
Full Moon wo Sagashite only follows its manga source for about one episode before going down a different route. VIZ Media had licensed the series, but released only the first 28 episodes on DVD before dropping the title. It was later streamed in its entirety in subbed-only form on Hulu before expiring from the service in August 2013.
