Synopsis

In "Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinju," Yotarou, a recently released ex-yakuza, is determined to build a new life through rakugo, the traditional Japanese art of comedic storytelling. His inspiration came from a performance by the celebrated artist Yakumo Yuurakutei, which he saw while in prison. After his release, Yotarou sincerely asks to become Yakumo's disciple, and to his surprise, Yakumo agrees to take him on as his first student. During his training, Yotarou meets Konatsu, a sharp-tongued young woman raised by Yakumo after the death of her father, Sukeroku Yuurakutei, a legendary rakugo performer. Her passion for her father's unique storytelling style sparks Yotarou's curiosity, leading him to explore this alternative approach even as he learns Yakumo's techniques. This discovery stirs up old memories and feelings in Yakumo, reminding him of his own rivalry and a solemn promise made long ago.
