Yuurakutei, Sukeroku
Summary
Sukeroku, born as Hatsutarou, was the lifelong companion and partner of Shin, who was a member of the Eighth Generation Yakumo clan, and the father of Konatsu. He trained alongside Bon under the mentorship of Yakumo Yuurakutei, choosing to discard his birth name in favor of his stage persona. As a shin'uchi, his distinctive and fervent performance style rapidly garnered him recognition within the rakugo world, though it simultaneously provoked resentment among the conservative figures of the rakugo association. He entered into a pact with Kikuhiko to preserve the art form through contrasting methods: Sukeroku aimed to modernize rakugo to attract wider audiences, while Kikuhiko vowed to maintain its traditional roots unchanged. Tragically, Sukeroku passed away at a young age before this arrangement could be realized, yet his influence on the evolution of rakugo remained profound and enduring.
