Synopsis
Jirou Azuma is a seventeen-year-old shinobi descendant living peacefully with his grandfather, using his ability to talk with animals to befriend and protect them. Like his grandfather, he continues the family's combat training traditions. His life alters when he rescues a stray black cat named Ragou, only to learn the feline is actually a mononoke—a spirit locked in a long conflict with humanity. When another mononoke attacks, Jirou defends Ragou with his shinobi skills but suffers a fatal wound. Instead of draining Jirou's remaining life, Ragou chooses to give him his own leftover power, reviving Jirou and granting him enhanced supernatural abilities that boost his shinobi techniques. Ryousuke Shiba, an agent of the Bureau of Espionage that eliminates hostile mononoke, witnesses the event. Shiba then invites Jirou and his grandfather to join the Bureau's new unit, Black Torch, to confront dangerous mononoke that threaten innocent people.
