Seventeen-year-old Jirou Azuma lives a quiet life with his grandfather, using his special gift for talking with animals to befriend and protect them. As heirs of an ancient shinobi bloodline, both Jirou and his grandfather train hard to preserve their martial heritage. Jirou's peaceful routine is shattered when he saves what looks like an ordinary black cat named Ragou, only to learn that the feline is actually a mononoke—a demonic being locked in a long-standing war with humanity. When a hostile mononoke chasing after Ragou attacks, Jirou uses his shinobi skills to defend the cat, suffering a critical wound in the process. Faced with the choice of draining Jirou's fading life force to restore his own power, Ragou instead chooses to pour his remaining energy into Jirou, reviving the teen and granting him fearsome supernatural abilities that enhance his combat moves. This incredible transformation is witnessed by Ryousuke Shiba, an agent of the Bureau of Espionage tasked with eliminating harmful mononoke. Shiba invites Jirou and his grandfather to join the Bureau's newly formed unit, Black Torch, which is dedicated to fighting malevolent mononoke that prey on innocent people.
