The story is an impressive sports manga that focuses on ordinary boys instead of heroes, following the growth of the Sumiya 2 junior high school baseball team (including its successive captains and players) in downtown Tokyo. Takao Taniguchi, previously a substitute player on the second team of Aoba Gakuin—a prestigious junior high school in the baseball world—transfers to Sumiya 2 and becomes the captain of the baseball club. Through steady training, the team strives to reach a decisive final game in the regional preliminaries against Aoba Gakuin.

When Taniguchi Takao was in junior high, he was a skilled baseball player. However, after breaking his finger, he could no longer play the sport. As a high school student, he would often stand alone after school, gazing sadly at the baseball field. Noticing this, Aiki—the captain of the soccer club—invited him to join the team. Though Takao had never played soccer before, his natural athleticism and diligent work ethic quickly made him a strong player, even earning him a spot as a regular. Yet Aiki sensed that Takao still hadn't let go of baseball, so he encouraged him to join the baseball club instead. At first, Takao struggled to fit in with the team's laid-back atmosphere, which differed greatly from his previous disciplined experience. Over time, however, his earnest attitude began to influence the others, and their approach slowly started to change.
