After the clash between Jinka Yamato and Yazen, the fragile equilibrium among katawara, humans, and those with magical powers is broken. Word of the dangaishu's collapse—monks under Yazen who hunted katawara—circulates, causing rogue katawara factions to form and worsening tensions between them and humans. Plagued by self-doubt about his abilities, Shinsuke Hyoudou drowns his sorrows in drink, frequently sharing sake with Senya, a onetime foe who contains a thousand katawara inside him. Disaster follows when a rampaging local god, agitated by Senya's proximity, attacks Tsukiko's father and kills him. Despite her loss, Tsukiko holds no resentment toward Senya and is determined to become Shinsuke's pupil. Shinsuke refuses to instruct her in the sword but reluctantly allows her to accompany him and Senya on their travels. Meanwhile, Tama Youko chases after Jinka, the nine-tailed fox whose power threatens to bring about worldwide destruction.
