Synopsis

While going about their normal routines—Kouichirou working on a building site, Mari returning from a trip abroad, Ayumu finishing track practice, and Gou absorbed in video games—the Mutou family experiences an abrupt and catastrophic disaster. A powerful earthquake rocks the Japanese islands, causing immense devastation and triggering a chain of events that leads the nation toward being swallowed by the sea. As social order collapses and the constant threat of submersion looms, the Mutou family unites to face this apocalyptic crisis. They must navigate this perilous new world, fighting for their very survival while also dealing with the emotional weight of immense grief.

Background

Nihon Chinbotsu 2020 is an original net animation and one of many works based on Sakyo Komatsu's award-winning 1973 disaster novel of the same name. The ten episodes were released exclusively on Netflix in July 2020.
