Summary
Standing at 189.2 cm and weighing 83 kg, Sakuragi Hanamichi wears jersey number 10 as a Power Forward for Shohoku High. Born on April 1 and known for his Jordan shoes, he begins the series as a notorious slacker whose romantic pursuits have ended in fifty rejections. His life changes when he meets Akagi Haruko, sparking an immediate infatuation that drives him to join the basketball team despite being a complete novice. Although he possesses exceptional physical gifts such as height, athleticism, stamina, speed, and leaping ability, he initially struggles to keep pace with his teammates. He considers himself a genius, boasting a level of self-confidence that often crosses into arrogance, and is easily recognized by his distinctive red hair. Notably, he shaves his head as penance for a mistake that contributed to Shohoku’s defeat against Kainan. Sakuragi’s early career was marred by poor fundamentals, resulting in him fouling out in his first few official games. However, his abilities evolved significantly over time. He first mastered basics like dribbling and layups, then, under the tutelage of Akagi, transformed into a formidable rebounder who became his defining strength in the latter half of the series. He proved crucial in clutch moments, such as dunking a ball in the final seconds of the league match against Ryonan that Akagi would have missed. His jump shooting was further refined by Coach Anzai through a grueling regimen of twenty thousand shots in one week, a skill he utilized to hit a buzzer-beater against Sannoh. Tragically, he suffered a back injury during that same match and underwent rehabilitation following Shohoku’s loss to Aiwa Academy. Despite these setbacks, Sakuragi exhibits immense tenacity and determination, compensating for his earlier shortcomings both on and off the court. While his initial motivations were his love for Haruko and his rivalry with Rukawa, the injury against Sannoh led to a profound realization: he had genuinely fallen in love with the game itself. This epiphany fueled his commitment to giving his all for his team, ultimately helping them secure victory.
