Synopsis
Hanamichi Sakuragi, notorious for his explosive temper, towering stature, and fiery red hair, enters Shohoku High with a single goal: to find a girlfriend and end his streak of 50 consecutive rejections from middle school. His reputation precedes him, causing most students to steer clear. After a series of events, Hanamichi is left with two clear convictions: "I hate basketball," and "I absolutely need a girlfriend." One day, a girl named Haruko Akagi approaches him, unaware of his troublesome past, and asks if he likes basketball. Hanamichi instantly falls for her, blurting out an enthusiastic yes. She leads him to the gymnasium, where she asks if he can perform a slam dunk. Trying to impress Haruko, he jumps but overshoots, smashing his head into the backboard. When Haruko tells the basketball team's captain about Hanamichi's almost superhuman athletic abilities, he gradually gets pulled into the bonds of friendship and rivalry of the sport he once despised.
