Summary
Eighteen-year-old Miroku is a wandering Buddhist monk, or houshi, who traverses the countryside offering services like exorcisms and yokai exterminations to make a living. He is afflicted by a hereditary curse originally placed on his grandfather, Miyatsu, by Naraku. Exploiting Miyatsu’s attraction to beautiful women, Naraku disguised himself as one and reflected one of his ofuda back to pierce the monk’s palm. This injury created a kazana, or air void, in his hand that sucks in anything regardless of mass. While Miroku utilizes this void as a potent weapon against yokai, it expands as he ages. If the curse is not lifted by Naraku’s death, the kazana will grow too large to control and consume him, mirroring the fate of his father and grandfather. This looming doom has led Miroku to adopt a hedonistic lifestyle that contrasts sharply with the demeanor of a proper monk. He is a skilled con artist who invents fake supernatural threats to secure food and shelter from grateful victims. Like his ancestor, he possesses a weakness for attractive women, frequently asking them to bear his children to ensure an heir for his ongoing hunt against Naraku. His hands have a habit of wandering, which often results in him being struck by Sango, the primary target of his advances. Despite this unseemly behavior, Miroku retains a core of deep spirituality, granting him impressive spiritual powers. The name Miroku is the Japanese term for Maitreya.
