Anime Veterans Bet on Hand-Drawn ZAN to Capture Fading Golden Age

At Anime Expo 2026, a panel of animation masters—including Armored Trooper Votoms creator Ryosuke Takahashi, mechanical director Toru Yoshida, and producers Hiroaki Ikegami and Tatsuyoshi Matsumoto—offered a sobering look at the state of Japanese animation. They described the 1980s golden age as an era of grueling all-nighters that produced defining works like Akira, yet warned that the number of working animators has barely budged around 10,000 even as series output soared into the hundreds.

Digital tools have accelerated certain pipelines, the veterans noted, but the fundamental pressure remains unchanged: talented artists still juggle multiple projects simultaneously, leaving little room for the meticulous, frame-by-frame attention that once defined the medium. Takahashi recalled the intense “forced labor” conditions under Osamu Tezuka and others, while Matsumoto called the period roughly 1985–1992 irreplaceable.

Their current collaboration, ZAN, Yoshitaka Amano’s dark fantasy limited series, deliberately returns to fully hand-drawn techniques. Drawing from more than 300 original artworks by the legendary artist (known for Final Fantasy and Vampire Hunter D), the project unites top talent such as director Masashi Ikeda, animation director Moriyasu Taniguchi, and mechanical designer Kunio Ogawara under the banner of Team Anime R.

The team sees ZAN—a time-and-space-spanning tale of swordsman ZAN, the girl Uzume, and mechanical familiar Panther battling in a world ruled by the sovereign RIKKA—as potentially the last major opportunity to preserve and present that classic era’s spirit on screen. “This is potentially the last opportunity to share the era of the Golden Age of Anime,” one producer reflected, underscoring a deliberate bet on craft over speed as the project moves forward with fresh producer notes now appearing on its official Substack.
