Synopsis
The narrative draws from traditional Chinese folklore, centering on a boy named Chenxiang. His mother is a goddess, while his father is a mortal. For their union, Chenxiang's uncle, Erlang Shen, punishes them by killing the father. The mother escapes and gives birth, but the boy grows up unaware of his divine lineage. She owns a magical Lotus Lantern whose light wards off evil. When his strict and powerful uncle kidnaps Chenxiang, his mother fights to rescue her son. However, Erlang Shen prevails and forces Chenxiang to reside in his palace atop the sacred mountains. He then imprisons his sister beneath a mountain for her transgressions. Despite his young age, Chenxiang flees the palace, taking the enchanted lotus lantern his mother lost in the battle. After surviving escapades with numerous beloved figures from Chinese mythology, Chenxiang grows into a courageous boy. He must battle his uncle to secure his mother's freedom—and, simultaneously, fall in love.
