In the world of Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari, saenome are responsible for sealing tsukumogami—spirits that dwell within objects—when they become a danger to society. Most of these spirits are harmless, and saenome typically resolve matters through simple conversation. Hyouma Kunato, still traumatized by a brutal past encounter with a violent spirit, rejects peaceful methods and attacks every tsukumogami he meets. His grandfather Zouhei, who views Hyouma as a potential clan leader, disapproves of this approach and gives him an ultimatum: live with Botan Nagatsuki, a girl whose home harbors six tsukumogami, or face expulsion from the clan. Driven by a desire for vengeance against the spirit that ruined his life, Hyouma grudgingly accepts Zouhei's arrangement. As mysterious malevolent forces begin disrupting the balance between worlds, Hyouma must gain Botan's trust and overcome his hostility toward her unusual family.

In "Malevolent Spirits: Mononogatari 2nd Season," Hyouma Kunato starts to find comfort among Botan Nagatsuki and her tsukumogami household—spirited objects known as marebito—though his main goal of seeking revenge remains unchanged. As Hyouma trains in Kyoto under the Kadomori clan, he is oblivious to the plans being orchestrated by the Bureau of Traditional Music, a group of three tsukumogami musical instruments. They question Botan's family about why Hyouma is close to the individual who acts as the bridge between humans and marebito. Soon after, the paper umbrella tsukumogami Hyouma has long pursued resurfaces and abducts Botan along with her college friends. In his rush to save the person he promised to protect, Hyouma might have to reconsider his objectives to keep his word to Botan.

Mononogatari 2nd Season was released on Blu-ray in two volumes from October 4, 2023, to December 6, 2023. The anime adapts chapters 27 through 44 of the manga.
