In the lavish inner court of the Kingdom of Ei, the Maiden Court thrives as the venue where the empress and four imperial consorts are chosen from five noble families. Among the candidates, Reirin Kou is regarded as the ideal successor to the throne, celebrated for her unmatched virtue and elegance, though her health is extremely delicate. By contrast, Keigetsu Shu is seen as a stain on the Maiden Court, her rough and uncouth behavior clashing with the refined surroundings. Keigetsu burns with fierce envy toward Reirin, often shooting her spiteful looks.
During a rare celestial occurrence, Keigetsu's jealousy boils over, and she tries to shove Reirin off a balcony to eliminate her rival. Reirin is rescued just in time, and Keigetsu is thrown into prison, awaiting execution. Unknown to all, Keigetsu uses magic to swap bodies with Reirin, planning to steal her identity and all that comes with it. As Keigetsu struggles to cope with Reirin's fragile constitution, Reirin delights in her newfound freedom and physical strength, determined to live life to the fullest no matter whose face she now wears.
