"Tobiuo no Boy wa Byouki desu" focuses on Operation Castle and the crew of the Daigo Fukuryuu Maru (S.S. Lucky Dragon 5). On March 1, 1954, a hydrogen bomb was detonated, producing an explosion as powerful as the one over Hiroshima. The fallout from this blast contaminated the crew with radioactive ash. The story then takes a fantastical turn as the same ash transforms marine creatures, allowing fish to speak and dress like humans. The anime primarily examines the effects of radioactive pollution on these anthropomorphized fish.
