In 1877, Kyoto is steeped in a widespread gloom caused by the recent move of the capital to Tokyo. Despite this, Genzo Shimadzu Sr. is thoroughly occupied with researching the development of a lightweight balloon for the Kyoto Prefecture. Following the balloon's successful ascent, an employee of the Shimadzu Corporation becomes driven to bridge Genzo's former enthusiasm with the present age and the future.
