First-year student Takahiko Urino wants to write an exceptionally compelling article for Furnado Monthly, his school's newspaper. Inspired by his girlfriend, second-year Yuki Osanai—who appears to be an ordinary student—Urino convinces the newspaper club to let him investigate a series of escalating arson incidents. His objective is to predict where the next fires will occur and identify the perpetrator. However, Urino's deep involvement in the case sometimes brings negative attention to the club, and his growing arrogance may put strain on his relationship with Osanai. Meanwhile, another seemingly average student, Jougorou Kobato, spends his days peacefully with his girlfriend, Tokiko Nakamaru. But when he encounters a fire connected to a previous case and linked to Osanai, Kobato finds himself slipping back into his former unconventional behavior as he pursues the truth.

Jougorou Kobato often meddles in the affairs of others. Recognizing that his talent for solving mysteries is neither sought after nor valued, he resolves to team up with his quiet friend Yuki Osanai in order to live a more normal life. As they begin their high school years, they aim to stay unnoticed and fade into the crowd. However, whenever compelling puzzles present themselves, Kobato tends to fall back into his habit of unraveling them. Even with their attempts to remain inconspicuous, they occasionally become involved in incidents that put their pursuit of a peaceful and uneventful existence at risk.
