In 2142 A.D., one hundred years after human negligence caused Earth's biosphere to collapse, the only remnants of civilization are the technologically advanced inhabitants of Ecoban, a magnificent enclosed refuge city built with scientific precision, and a small group of refugees surviving in the Wasteland just beyond its walls. Ecoban's leaders initially supported these refugees in exchange for their labor mining the raw materials necessary to keep Ecoban functioning.
Over the century, Ecoban's rulers have devolved into a lazy elite class that has reduced the "Diggers" to a state of slavery, giving them only the bare minimum to stay alive. Meanwhile, the machinery that sustains Ecoban continues to pollute the outside world. The Diggers have finally reached a breaking point and are striking for improved conditions. At the same time, Ecoban's equipment is deteriorating, and repairing it requires subjecting the Diggers to even more pollution, putting their lives at greater risk.
