In the summer of 1945 in Hiroshima, a young girl named Nobuko rescues a hungry kitten from a flock of crows. Though her parents are initially reluctant, Nobuko persuades them to let her keep the cat. Together with her brother Makoto, she names the kitten Kuro. Kuro quickly brings happiness and laughter into the family's home. As the hardships of World War II bear down on Japan, caring for Kuro becomes more difficult for Nobuko and her family. One morning in August, Kuro begins to act oddly...

In a desperate attempt to revive his faltering writing career, Momosuke Yamaoka embarks on a journey across Edo-period Japan to gather one hundred ghost tales. During his travels through the mountains, he encounters a monk named Mataichi. Despite warnings to turn back, Momosuke presses on and inadvertently witnesses Mataichi and his two companions committing a murder. It becomes clear that this group acts as vigilantes, investigating paranormal incidents and meting out justice to the guilty. As Momosuke continues his quest for stories, he repeatedly crosses paths with the trio, becoming increasingly enmeshed in their activities. Gradually pulled into the dark world they inhabit, he grapples with the moral complexities of their actions and the thin line between human and supernatural realms.

Summer 1945 marks three years since the war between Japan and the United States began. Gen, a young boy, lives in Hiroshima—a city oddly untouched by the bombing that has devastated nearly every other Japanese city. Life is hard but fulfilling; food is scarce, and Gen's family suffers from severe malnutrition, endangering his pregnant mother. With little free time, Gen and his younger brother Shinji help their parents work, striving to keep their family alive through the tough times. They have no idea what the Americans have planned for Hiroshima. On August 6, 1945, their lives are about to change forever.

After her father's sudden death, eleven-year-old Momo Miyaura moves with her mother to a remote island in the Seto Inland Sea, leaving behind their former home in Tokyo. The only thing left from her father is an unfinished letter that begins with "Dear Momo," which leaves her with a lingering feeling of unease. In this strange coastal town, Momo struggles to adjust to the old wooden houses, the calm countryside, and the mysterious shrines that dot the area. While exploring the attic of her new home, she finds an ancient picture book filled with illustrations of various youkai. Soon after, odd occurrences start happening around the village, and Momo meets three playful youkai spirits. A Letter to Momo follows a young girl as she copes with her unfamiliar environment and tries to decode the puzzling message left behind by her father.
