More than fifty thousand years ago, the ELFs—short for The Equipment: Living Forms—were created to aid humanity in fighting the Honkai, a force of decay. The experiment succeeded, granting the ELFs consciousness and raising them to a status nearly equal to humans. However, the devastating actions of the Ninth Herrscher nearly wiped them out, casting most of them into the vast Sea of Quanta.
In a separate bubble universe, though, the ELFs' story took a different course. There, they coexist peacefully with humans and attend ELF Academy, a special institution where they receive an education much like their human peers. This academy provides a tranquil setting for the diverse personalities among its students, such as Selune's Elegy with her chuunibyou behaviors and Blood Embrace with his "gangster" flair, offering a respite from the harsh realities of the primary universe.
