One of the standout works premiering at our festival, Midori-Ko is a beloved creation by Japanese animator Kurosaka Keita, presenting a whimsically nightmarish vision of 21st-century Tokyo teetering on the edge of apocalypse. Over a decade in the making and crafted entirely by hand using colored pencil, Kurosaka’s fantastical passion project is a breathtaking sight. From the intricate detail and creativity that saturates every frame emerges the tale of a young woman striving to develop a dream-food capable of ending global hunger. Blending Frederic Back’s subtle, tactile textures with Bill Plympton’s frantic mutations and David Lynch’s haunting wormholes, Kurosaka’s work nevertheless maintains its own unique, luminous intensity.
