Set in a fairy tale, Budori Gusuko is a young man living in the Tohoku forest region of northeastern Japan during the 1920s. After repeated droughts and natural disasters force him to leave his home, he goes in search of a brighter future and eventually joins the Ihatov Volcano Department, a group of scientists dedicated to fighting the very calamities that displaced him.
