In *The Relative Worlds*, Shin Hazama has lived in emotional seclusion since the mysterious and sudden death of his mother during his childhood. His only meaningful connection is with Kotori Izumi, the cheerful and compassionate daughter of his scientist father’s employer. As they near the end of their third year of high school, Shin and Kotori begin to explore deeper personal and romantic feelings for each other. Their newfound bond is shattered by the unexpected death of Shin’s father. In the aftermath, Shin and Kotori uncover the truth behind both his parents’ deaths when they encounter agents from a technologically advanced but dystopian version of Japan in a parallel universe. One such agent is Jin, Shin’s alternate self, who battles against the mechanical warriors Miko and Niko. Because of the interconnected nature of their relative selves, Jin seeks to protect the vulnerable Shin to ensure their mutual survival while also aiming to eliminate Kotori to undermine the iron rule of Princess Kotoko, his rival and the one responsible for his parents’ murder. Faced with this harsh reality, Shin and Kotori must confront their true feelings for each other as the threat of an imminent world collapse looms.

In 1931, during the sixty-fourth year of the Meiji era, the Tokugawa Shogunate retains its authority by regulating a newly discovered resource called the "Dragon Vein," which has ushered Japan into a technologically advanced version of the Edo period. Against this setting, an elite execution unit known as "Nue" is assigned to protect the Shogunate from the rebel faction, the "Kuchinawa." Sawa Yukimura, who manages the Tsuyukasa Bookshop, oversees its daily operations while secretly seeking retribution against the one responsible for wiping out her clan and family. Possessing a unique ability to transform due to her blue blood, Sawa chooses to join the Nue in return for information about Janome, the leader of the Kuchinawa.
