In the series Juuni Senshi Bakuretsu Eto Ranger, the Eto Rangers travel through the Space-Time Transmitting Machine Kirinda to restore balance in the Novel Worlds of Mugen. These rangers are anthropomorphic animals, each representing one of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs and the Twelve Branches of Buddhism. Known as the Eto animals in Japan, they are tasked with maintaining the integrity of these imaginative realms, which span from ancient legends to contemporary literature. The repeating narratives of these worlds are vital for human well-being. Overseeing Mugen, a floating continent above an ocean under the skybound Novel Pole, is Princess Aura, whose power comes from the Great God Goal but is restricted to the small palace island that Aura inhabits.
The Eto Rangers' nemesis is Nyanma, the forsaken Spirit of Cats, whose real name is Chocolat. Excluded from becoming one of the 12 protectors due to losing a race (a tale with multiple versions in actual folklore), Nyanma now seeks revenge by corrupting Novel Worlds with Jarei Monsters.
Each time a Jarei Monster invades a Novel World, it alters the storyline, creating alternate versions or parodies of the original. To combat this, Bakumaru, the Spirit of Mice, uses the Genmakyou mirror to reveal the evil spirit's true form by declaring "Jarei Shouran!" after gathering sufficient evidence. The Eto Rangers frequently immerse themselves in the narrative to identify the monster, sometimes adopting roles within the story. Once the monster is defeated, Bakumaru raises a hand holding one of Aura's 12 gems and shouts "Daikourin Kirinda!" At this command, Kirinda materializes from a dimensional rift and purifies the evil spirit with a beam weapon, proclaiming "Jouka!" (Purification).
