Charlie is a "Humanzee"—a hybrid created in a biological laboratory, part human and part chimpanzee. Raised by his adoptive human parents, he is now 15 years old and entering high school. There, he meets Lucy, a smart and solitary girl who becomes his very first friend. However, his seemingly ordinary life is shattered when the animal rights extremists who freed his mother from the lab fifteen years ago reappear as terrorists, determined to kidnap Charlie at any cost.
