Suzu Urano, a gentle and naive young woman with a talent for drawing, spends her childhood helping her grandmother run their family's seaweed business on the outskirts of Hiroshima. As she grows older, Suzu begins a new chapter by marrying Shuusaku Houjou, a man she does not know, and moves into his home.
Adapting to her new surroundings proves difficult for the homesick Suzu as Japan's involvement in World War II intensifies. With the war encroaching on her community, turning peace into chaos, Suzu must find ways to endure and support those around her.
