On a snowy Christmas Eve, Tyltyl and Mytyl remain at home, their usual festive spirit dampened by their mother's illness. Unable to sleep, they are suddenly visited by Berylune, a strange and mercurial magical spirit who bursts through their window to reveal that their world is not the only one in existence. Guided by Berylune and accompanied by various spirits along with their pets, who have taken on humanoid forms, the two siblings embark on a quest to locate the Blue Bird of Happiness and cure their mother. Their journey takes them through a series of strange and wondrous lands, culminating in a final confrontation with the spirit of darkness as they strive to achieve their elusive goal.

In the year 2052, Earth has finally achieved a state of lasting peace—until the arrival of the Death Force, a merciless alien race fleeing their own dying solar system in desperate search of a new home. They attack the planet using a gigantic satellite warship called Terror Star and begin terraforming Earth to suit their needs. Humanity's sole hope rests on Colin Collins and a small group of his fellow surviving students, who must crew a top-secret submersible vessel capable of battling the invaders both beneath the sea and in outer space. Note: The first episode is approximately 96 minutes long, rather than the usual 24-minute runtime. It was later split into four episodes for streaming, home video releases, and most Western dubs.

In 2201, the Space Battleship Yamato returns from its fierce clash with Emperor Zordar and the Comet Empire. Sanada, Aihara, and Shima, now discharged from the hospital, visit Okita's memorial to honor their fallen comrades. There they encounter Tasuke, the son of Tokugawa, who reveals his ambition to join the Yamato crew once he finishes his cadet training. At his graduation ceremony, Tasuke accidentally overturns a boat full of new cadets, as they were all captivated by the Yamato instead of concentrating on their own navigation. Despite initial difficulties during liftoff caused by the inexperienced engine crew inadvertently hitting the wrong switches and triggering a stall, the Yamato sets off on what was originally intended to be a routine training mission.

When a stray missile from a clash between the Galman empire and the Bolar Federation strikes the sun, the star transforms into a ticking radiation bomb. The Star Force once again launches into the cosmos, embarking on a desperate quest to find a new world where humanity can survive.

One year after the Star Force's successful return to save Earth, a new menace emerges from deep space. A massive White Comet speeds toward the galaxy, annihilating everything in its path. This comet is no ordinary celestial object—it is the sinister Comet Empire, a merciless conqueror of planets, and Earth is its next target. Despite being ordered not to, the Star Force launches an investigation. However, even if they defeat the powerful flagship Andromeda, they remain unsure of their new enemy's true motives.
