Kozue, a middle school student, is a dedicated volleyball player whose goal is to play for Japan's national team. Over the course of the series, she advances from the school district league to the Japanese volleyball finals and eventually the international championship. Yet the higher and faster she rises in her career, the more she encounters the darker side of success: overwhelming expectations, arrogance, and jealousy that escalate into serious problems.
