The Civil War has erupted in the United States, and Mr. March, a physician and father to four daughters, has gone to the front lines. Madam March is left at home with their girls: the eldest Margaret (Meg), Josephine (Jo)—a budding writer and a tomboy—Elisabeth (Beth), a shy girl passionate about the piano, and the youngest, Amy, who loves to draw. The four sisters soon become acquainted with their neighbor Mr. Lawrence, whom they initially find a bit intimidating, and also with his grandson Laurie, who is Jo's age. Together, they face many ups and downs—the temper of Aunt March, petty jealousies, happy moments, and the war lurking in the background—all while hoping their father will return safely.
