Long ago, the animals of the zodiac secured their positions through a foot race, but the selection process has changed. Now, every millennium, a new set of zodiac candidates is determined by a battle centered on happiness. This competition, the Zodiac Royale, is a free-for-all where each animal participant is linked by fate to a human "master" living on Earth. Only by bringing happiness to that master can an animal rise in the rankings. Ichika Kotobuki, a secret enthusiast of tokusatsu—programs featuring heroes and dramatic special effects—attempts to assist an injured dog and is pulled into the Zodiac Royale as the master of that very dog, Komamaru. Initially reluctant to take part, Ichika eventually agrees on the condition that if they win, she will be granted prosperity for an entire year. For Komamaru to make Ichika happy and secure his own seat among the zodiac, he must embody the flashy yet noble spirit of the tokusatsu heroes.
