After moving to the quiet village of Hinamizawa, Keiichi Maebara never imagined he would make friends so easily. Now his days are filled with fun and games alongside his new companions, and life feels perfect. But one day he catches a glimpse of his friend, the tomboyish Mion Sonozaki, working at a maid café. Deciding to give her a hard time about it, his playful teasing turns to astonishment when the girl reveals she is actually Mion's twin sister, Shion. As fate would have it, both girls want to spend the annual Cotton Drifting Festival with Keiichi. However, when Shion breaks the town's sacred rules by sneaking into a sealed shrine during the festival and dragging Keiichi along, everything takes a dark turn. Now Keiichi and Shion live in dread of being spirited away because of their transgression and must search for a way to make amends before it's too late.
