In 1711, aboard the ship Advenna Avis, a gathering of alchemists calls forth a demon to obtain eternal life. The demon grants them an immortality elixir and reveals that the only way to end their existence is by "consuming" one another. Not long after, one of them begins devouring his fellows. Realizing the danger of remaining together, they scatter throughout the world. Jump to 1930s America, where a certain federal investigator works tirelessly to curb the surge of organized crime during Prohibition, send a particularly vexing terrorist to Alcatraz, and capture an outrageous duo of thieves. Meanwhile, the transcontinental train named the Flying Pussyfoot leaves a trail of blood across the nation. In 2002, a small group of the original Advenna Avis alchemists set out to locate the rest of their fellow immortals. But there is one companion they never anticipated encountering again. Events that seem disconnected—from a sleepy Italian town in the early 1700s to a modern luxury cruise ship traversing the Pacific—gradually reveal themselves to be far more intertwined than anyone could have foreseen...

Background

Baccano! won the Dengeki Novel Gold Prize in 2002. Two drama CDs were released; the first was 1931 The Grand Punk Railroad, a retelling of the second and third novels, released on March 31, 2006. The second was Firo Prochainezo witnesses the 53rd death of Pietro Gonzalez released on October 24, 2007. The series was published in English by Yen Press under the Yen On imprint in hardcover format from May 24, 2016, to May 23, 2023.
