In 2187, Earth's worsening climate has made the planet uninhabitable, forcing humanity to take refuge inside domed cities. Over the years, conflict and instability have caused these cities to become isolated from one another. Young teenager Shuu lives in Datania, a dome structured like a school where life is controlled by a data program named Zero, along with its human aides, Nines and later Berk. Under this regime, children are forced to live and work according to a strict schedule that resets their emotions and instincts, turning them into unfeeling automatons. Shuu, who dreams of one day seeing the ocean, eventually escapes Datania with his friends, helped by Ein, May, and Dolly—rebels called the Returners who live underground. Joining the Returners, Shuu sets out to find Amaroute, a supposedly utopian dome city. On this journey, he experiences the outside world for the first time and fights against Zero and his forces, who are trying to harvest DT—a unique substance found in humans like Shuu and his new allies. When they finally reach Amaroute, however, the Returners discover it is also under Zero's control, now aided by a clone of Shuu.
