In the year 2022, where quantum computing has advanced significantly and many people have uploaded their consciousness into cyberspace, the story follows Remu. His sister Shiki skipped several grades and entered high school at age fourteen in the Okinotori-island Mega Float City (OMFC), an educational hub. During a Skype conversation, Shiki revealed to Remu that she had been communicating with him from inside cyberspace, with her physical body preserved in a nutrient-filled tank called a "Body Pool." Nanomachines embedded in her brain connected her to the network. Though initially shocked, Remu accepted this reality. However, disaster struck when an event known as "Early Rupture" caused the network to overload, trapping users' minds in cyberspace while their lifeless bodies remained in the Body Pools. Determined to recover Shiki's consciousness, Remu travels to her apartment in OMFC and finds Shiki, who had fled the hospital. Yet, the person claims not to be Shiki but someone who accidentally took over her body. As Remu struggles with this confusing development, the apartment is suddenly and violently attacked.
